The spring beach season continues in Florida with Hillsborough Community College (HCC) having a pair of matches and splitting dual matches with State College of Florida (SCF). On March 1, SCF prevailed at home over HCC 4 – 1 at Siesta Key. HCC returned the favor the next week, March 8, on their home beach, Ben T. Davis Beach winning with a score of 4 – 1. Polk State College filled out the tri-match format on the 8, but dropped both dual matches.
"Friday was a perfect day for 'beach' volleyball! The weather was perfect and play was competitive. The music and play by play announcing was a special touch that created a fun and enjoyable atmosphere." SCF Head Coach, Carmine Garofalo, noted that his team enjoyed the competition and all the effort by HCC, "A big thank you to Gary (HCC) and his staff for their hospitality and the opportunity to beat Friday traffic." German Del Valle, Head Coach of PSC added that "The girls love it! Thanks a lot for your hard work."
The players, coaches, and officials are excited too with the growth of sand volleyball in the Junior College ranks. "It's rewarding to see the players' enthusiasm and determination on the beach. They were instantly hooked," commented Coach Gary Larkin of HCC. David Carstenson, who officiated the matches, agreed saying "I think we are all doing work now for the kids for future generations to love the gospel of sand volleyball."
The Suncoast is back in action on March 22, on St. Pete Beach, with SPC, SFSC, and HCC.
