Head Baseball Coach Ryan Beckman is pleased to announce the program's second Player of the Week honors of the 2021 campaign. Jonathan Alonso certainly hit his way to the recognition, hitting .333 (6 for 18) with a homerun and 5 runs batted in. Perhaps the greatest aspect of the week was the consistency of his production; Alonso hit safely and drove in runs in each of the Titan's contests, including a win over nationally ranked Central Florida.
Alonso had a peculiar road to SPC, starting off the school year expecting to play for D2 Eckerd College. Yet when news arrived they would not be competing in baseball in the spring, Alonso found himself a home on the other side of Pinellas county. Coach Ryan Beckman is certainly glad to have him "Jonathan brings a veteran presence to our club, and that's not something we get at the Junior College level all that often". As for his contributions at the plate , they are no surprise to Beckman who says " Alonso has done a lot to cement himself in the middle of our lineup, with his work ethic we expect the quality at bats to continue into conference play".
In addition to his offensive contribution. Alonso had an errorless weekend at first base, scooping up potentially errant throws from all over the infield. " I know he saved me once or twice this past week" says Freshman Infielder Dustin Low.
All in all it was a big week for the program, with the Titans rising to 10-5 overall after a 4-2 record on the week. The first week of March brings with it the opening week of Suncoast Conference play. St Pete will square off against Hillsborough (5-7) in a three game series, with the middle contest coming at Jack Russell Stadium at 5pm.
