St. Petersburg College Titans competed recently in the FCSAA State Championships last month in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Titans finished as runners up by placing 2nd in the tournament behind the state champion Hillsborough Community College. These 2 schools squared off against one another with HCC defeating the Titans by 2-1/2 points. Sophomore Naomi McKenzie won #1 Singles defeating State College of Florida's Carlota Martinez 6-0/6-1. Not only did McKenzie win #1 singles she was also named FCSAA Player of the Year. McKenzie wasn't the only Titan who took #1 singles, Sophomore Valeriia Cherfus won #2 singles defeating Eastern Florida's Kayla Greco 6-1/6-0. These 2 standouts teamed together in the doubles competition placing second by defeating State College of Florida's Carlota Martinez and Kia Carvlho-Landell 6-0/6-1. The Titans have had unbelievable success and will now fly to Tucson, Arizona this week for the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships on May 5th.
